Dr James Lau is one of Hong Kong’s most distinguished cross-border legal practitioners and academic jurists. A founding partner of Robinsons, Lawyers and co-founder of Robinsons (AU) Pty Ltd, Dr Lau has spent over three decades building a practice that spans corporate law, securities, technology law, cross-border investment and legal translation across Asia, Australasia and beyond.
Dr Lau holds a Doctor of Juridical Science from China University of Political Science and Law — one of China’s foremost institutions of legal learning — in addition to degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Sydney. This exceptional academic foundation underpins a practice that is simultaneously scholarly and intensely commercial.
In 2025, Dr Lau was recognised by Asian Legal Business as one of the Top 15 GBA Dual-Qualified Lawyers in Asia — an accolade reserved for practitioners who have demonstrated sustained excellence in navigating the legal landscape spanning Hong Kong and Mainland China. He was also named by 律新社 (LawCN) as one of the Top 20 Best Lawyers providing overseas legal services in 2025, and recognised as a Leader of Shenzhen Foreign Lawyers (深圳市涉外律师领军人才).
Beyond private practice, Dr Lau is the chairman and founding member of the Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translation — a body he has built and led with a mission to promote legal bilingualism and raise the standards of legal translation between Chinese and English. He has published extensively on corporate law, technology law, and legal translation, and has delivered lectures at the Open University of Hong Kong (now known as Hong Kong Metropolitan University), and the School of Continuing and Professional Education of City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Institute of Technology, and the School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University.Dr Lau’s corporate practice is marked by its breadth and its depth in novel and complex matters. He has acted in one of the world’s first major cryptocurrency High Court disputes, representing a leading Bitcoin Exchange in a US$100 billion market against a PRC-based Bitcoin mining company — successfully defeating a default judgment application and securing an adverse costs order. He has represented healthcare supply chain clients in tender challenge proceedings under the WTO Government Procurement Agreement, and has structured sophisticated cross-border investments involving parties in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.
