Robinsons (AU) Pty Ltd  (‘the Firm’, ‘we’, ‘us’, ‘our’) is committed to protecting the privacy of all individuals who interact with us. This Privacy Policy sets out how we collect, use, disclose, store and protect your personal information, in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

This Policy applies to all clients, prospective clients, website visitors and other parties who provide personal information to the Firm.

We may collect the following types of personal information:

  • Identity information: name, date of birth, passport or identification details
  • Contact information: address, email address, telephone number
  • Financial information: bank account details (where required for transactions), billing information
  • Legal and matter-related information: information provided in connection with the legal matter for which you engage us
  • Website usage data: IP address, browser type, pages visited, duration of visit (collected via cookies — see clause 10)
  • Communications: records of emails, letters and telephone conversations

We collect sensitive information only where it is directly relevant to the legal services requested and where you have consented, or where we are otherwise required or permitted by law.

  • Directly from you — when you contact us, complete a form on our website, or engage us to provide legal services
  • From third parties — such as courts, other lawyers, government agencies, financial institutions, or your authorised representatives, where relevant to your matter
  • From publicly available sources — such as land registries, company registers or court records

We collect and use personal information to:

  • Provide legal advice, representation and related services
  • Conduct conflicts of interest checks
  • Verify your identity as required by the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) and associated rules
  • Maintain records of our engagement and correspondence
  • Comply with our professional, regulatory and statutory obligations
  • Manage billing and payment
  • Respond to your enquiries
  • Send you legal updates or newsletters (with your consent, subject to your right to unsubscribe at any time)

We may disclose your personal information to:

  • Other lawyers, barristers or legal professionals involved in your matter
  • Courts, tribunals and regulatory authorities as required or permitted by law
  • Associated firms within the Robinsons Law Group where cross-jurisdictional legal services are required
  • Our service providers including IT support, document management and accounting services, who are bound by confidentiality obligations
  • Government agencies (including ASIC, AUSTRAC, ATO, DFAT, or the Department of Home Affairs) where required by law

We do not sell personal information to third parties, and do not disclose it for marketing purposes without your consent.

As an internationally connected firm, we may disclose your personal information to recipients located outside Australia — in particular in Hong Kong, the PRC, New Zealand or elsewhere — where an associated firm within our network is engaged on your matter.

Before disclosing personal information overseas, we will take reasonable steps to ensure the overseas recipient handles it consistently with the APPs. By engaging us on a matter involving overseas legal services, you consent to the necessary disclosure to relevant overseas recipients.

We take all reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, including through password-protected document management systems, encrypted communications and physical security.

No data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed as fully secure. If you are concerned about transmitting sensitive information electronically, please contact us by telephone.

You have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you and to request corrections if the information is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. Please contact our Privacy Officer at our office address. We will respond within 30 days.

If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact our Privacy Officer in the first instance. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au.
